Plastidecoverre: Saving the planet, one label at a time

Entrepreneur’s corner | Feb 21, 2021

Plastidecoverre is not a new company — it was founded in 1961 by a Mr. Chrysler. However, ever since it was purchased by Martin Tessier and his two co-owners in 2016, things have changed considerably.

Their bread and butter, so to speak, is silkscreen printing directly on items. In fact, for every product we buy that has a label, there is the option of silkscreen printing, which is still not very well understood, but is much safer for the environment.

Silkscreen printing

For every label you see attached to a product that you buy, three are thrown away. That is why silkscreen printing is better for the planet. The ecological footprint for this process is much smaller.

According to Martin Tessier: “The most important thing to understand is that we are protecting the environment. Our Company’s goal is to replace labels and shrink sleeves. As a society, we talk a lot about the environment, but when it comes to the choices we make, we are not always well educated in terms of the latest information. For every label you see attached to a product that you buy, three are thrown away. That is why silkscreen printing is better for the planet. The ecological footprint for this process is much smaller.”

Plastidecoverre currently has 22 employees serving a multitude of clients in the food, cosmetics, brewing and pharmaceutical industries. It offers brand creation services, and more importantly, printing directly on items.

We now offer very competitive prices, partly because we have managed to automate our operations.

“People think that silkscreen printing is very expensive, but that isn’t true! We now offer very competitive prices, partly because we have managed to automate our operations. Silkscreen printing used to be done by hand, which is why the cost was so high”, Martin recalls. In 2018, Plastidecoverre acquired a piece of equipment to automate the process, which saves time and money for both the Company and its clients.

Bring on the clients

Martin’s Company is ready to take on numerous new contracts. He clarifies: “We have taken risks, but it has been worth it. The Company is doing well, and we have a great deal of capacity. Now we need people to know about us.” In fact, with prices that are competitive with those offered in China, available production capacity and a promising environmental commitment, Plastidecoverre is well positioned for growth. That is why its leader is planning to commercialize its offer on the American market, beginning with New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. “We see opportunity in these regions, with microbreweries and microdistilleries that are in full growth mode and that require our services, among other areas”, Martin explains.

Support from PME MTL

Martin Tessier is of the opinion that, like his own Company, PME MTL must become better known. After calling upon the services of the Est-de-l’Île service hub, he has nothing but praise for the people who provided him with support. “Montréal entrepreneurs who do not have access to PME MTL are missing out on an incredible opportunity! The services they provided were extremely helpful to us, as owners of an SME. They are a gold mine with their advice, competence and kindness. Simply put, if I could hire them for my Company, I would!” Martin says in jest.
