Sustainable design for businesses is now an essential driver of commercial performance and the circular economy.
On February 24, 2026, PME MTL Centre-Ouest presented a webinar on sustainable design for businesses, hosted by Marie-Anne Miljours from Rumker.
Commercial design improves business performance
The data presented is clear: strategic design can generate significant gains.
The study Commerce + Design : Les clés du succès shows that well-thought-out design can lead to:
- an increase in customer base of up to 57%;
- an increase in revenue of approximately 45%;
- a 50% increase in customer loyalty;
- an increase in new customers of up to 63%;
- a 58% increase in staff motivation.
These figures remind us that commercial design is a structural investment.
The market favors responsible businesses
The market context further reinforces the appeal of sustainable design. Customer expectations are changing rapidly:
- 61% of people believe that companies should place greater emphasis on the environment and sustainability;
- 56% have already stopped buying from companies whose practices do not align with their values;
- 49% believe that companies must reduce their environmental impact.

The example of Filles Fattoush: when reuse becomes a competitive advantage
Theproject of Les Filles Fattoush, which recently opened a store at Jean-Talon Market, is a concrete example of what a circular economy approach to commercial development can mean.
Rather than sending existing materials to landfill and rebuilding entirely with new materials, the project incorporated wood recovered from the Montreal Olympic Stadium. This choice reduced the purchase of new raw materials, decreased renovation waste, and created a strong narrative identity for the space.
In a competitive commercial environment, this approach becomes a differentiating factor. The reclaimed material tells a story, reinforces the site's roots in the community, and lends credibility to the store's commitment to sustainability.
Sustainable design thus becomes a strategic lever for commercial development and retail performance.
What are the economic benefits for a business?
Integrating the circular economy into a development project therefore reduces long-term costs through reuse, improves space modularity, limits the need for complete renovations, and enhances the brand's image among customers who are sensitive to environmental issues.
At the retail level, optimizing space and avoiding a complete overhaul can represent substantial savings, particularly in a context where construction and material costs are on the rise.
Where to find secondhand equipment for sustainable business
For businesses wishing to incorporate reuse into their design plans, several local resources facilitate access to quality materials:
- RECO: a store specializing in the resale and repurposing of commercial furniture and equipment.
- Twenifor: a platform for the recovery and redistribution of construction surplus.
- Écoscéno: a Montreal-based organization that recovers materials from the cultural and events sector to give them a second life.
These solutions reduce investment costs, limit the use of new resources, and concretely embed businesses in a circular economy approach.
Sustainable design: a strategic lever for local businesses
Sustainable design for businesses combines three essential dimensions: economic performance, brand consistency, and environmental responsibility.
The question is no longer whether sustainable design is relevant, but how to integrate it in a structured and profitable way.
